Urgent Deadline Warning for South African Medical Aid Members Changing Options for 2027

October 31, 2026
South African medical aid members have been warned not to miss their schemes’ administrative deadlines to change benefit options for 2027, with the earliest critical cut-off landing today, Saturday, 31 October. Missing these strict windows means you could be locked into your existing benefit option and pricing structure for another full calendar year.
For human resources clerks, payroll administrators, corporate benefit consultants, and job trackers using jobbing101.blogspot.com, keeping tabs on medical aid restructuring timelines is critical. Plan changes directly affect monthly net salary take-home pay packages, employee wellness profiles, and corporate payroll data captures across both private and public sectors.

Don't Get Caught Out: Scheme-by-Scheme Cut-off Dates
Hagop Jaghlassian, CEO of Curemed Health and Wealth Consultants, cautioned that members should not assume they have until late December to submit their paperwork. Schemes apply their cut-off dates strictly, and the 1 January operational date is simply when the newly selected options physically kick in.
The administrative deadlines vary significantly, making it essential to cross-check your specific provider:
  • Bonitas Medical Fund: Today, 31 October 2026, is the closing date for public servants paid through the Government's Public Service Salary System (Persal). All other Bonitas members have until 30 November.
  • Fedhealth & Momentum Health: All 2027 option selection forms must reach these schemes by 30 November.
  • Medihelp: Members paid via the Persal system face a 30 November cut-off, while independent and corporate members have until 15 December.
  • Profmed & KeyHealth: Standard option-change submissions must be finalized before 15 December.
  • Bestmed & Medshield: The official scheme closing dates are 31 December, but Curemed has enforced an internal client submission deadline of 15 December to allow for strict paperwork validation before corporate shutdowns.
  • Discovery Health Medical Scheme: Discovery has not yet published its absolute verifiable deadline for 2027. However, consultants are proactively working toward a 15 December cut-off for their client batches.

Calculated Contribution Escalations for 2027
Reviewing your monthly healthcare budget is more urgent than ever, as medical schemes have rolled out their weighted average contribution hikes ahead of the upcoming open-season cycle:
Medical SchemeWeighted Average Contribution Increase for 2027
KeyHealth8.5%
Bonitas8.7%
Discovery Health8.2%
Momentum Health7.9%
Medshield7.9%
Medihelp7.5%
Bestmed7.35%
Note on Fedhealth: Fedhealth announced specific adjustments of 8% on its myFED plan and 8.4% on flexiFED Savvy, with roughly 60% of its base facing an average weighted premium climb of 8.9%. Some specific plan premium calculations scale up to 13.5%.

Action Steps for Corporate Workers and Public Servants
The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) encourages all members to finalize their plan comparisons by late November to avoid processing logjams. When choosing a tier, do not make a final choice based purely on premium price alone. Carefully audit whether your family's chronic medication limits, day-to-day medical savings accounts, and private hospital networks still align with your healthcare realities for the upcoming year.
