Johannesburg Zoo is hiring a **Keeper (Pachyderms)** on a permanent basis to oversee animal welfare, exhibit maintenance, and contribute to conservation efforts. This position offers an attractive salary ranging from **R446,155.07 to R545,625.07 per annum**.


## **Job Purpose**

The successful candidate will be responsible for the care, welfare, and conservation of pachyderms, maintaining enclosure standards, and adhering to animal husbandry practices to ensure the health and safety of animals under their care.

## **Key Responsibilities**


### **Animal Husbandry and Welfare**

- Develop and implement collection plans for animal acquisition and breeding programs.

- Perform daily care routines, including feeding, training, and monitoring animal health.

- Administer treatments under veterinary guidance and manage hand-rearing of newborns.


### **Exhibit Maintenance**

- Ensure enclosures are secure, clean, and meet hygiene standards.

- Supervise enclosure renovations and implement pest control measures.

- Maintain accurate signage and monitor enclosure water quality.


### **Observation and Record-Keeping**

- Conduct daily animal observations and report any abnormal behavior.

- Record feeding times, faecal observations, reproductive behaviors, and other key data.

- Manage records in alignment with standards like ARKS and studbooks.


### **Team Supervision and Training**

- Lead and train a team of animal care staff.

- Ensure compliance with Johannesburg Zoo policies and international guidelines from WAZA, PAAZA, and AKAA.


### **Compliance and Safety**

- Ensure adherence to SHEQ policies and other safety measures.

- Respond to emergencies, including animal captures and escapes.

- Comply with laws governing animal care and transportation.

## **Qualifications and Experience**

- **Minimum Education:** Diploma/Degree in Nature Conservation or a relevant NQF Level 6 qualification.

- Training in animal handling and gun usage (gun license preferred).

- Minimum **3 years of experience** in animal husbandry or a related conservation field.

- Familiarity with disease identification, animal training, and use of animal recording systems like ISIS.
